Som Nath Sapkota, former Deputy General Secretary of the International Coordination Council (ICC) of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), has been appointed as the Spokesperson of NRNA ICC for the tenure 2025–2027.
Sapkota has been actively involved with NRNA since its establishment in 2003 and is widely recognized for his consistent contribution to strengthening the global Nepali diaspora network. He began his formal leadership journey in 2006 as an Executive Member of NRNA NCC Portugal and later became the Founding President of NRNA NCC Denmark in 2009, where he played a significant role in organizing and strengthening the Nepali community.
Over the years, Sapkota has served the NRNA International Coordination Council in several key leadership roles, including ICC Member (2011–2013), Deputy Regional Coordinator for Europe (2013–2015), Advisor (2015–2017), ICC Member (2017–2019), Joint Treasurer (2019–2021), Spokesperson (2021–2023), and Deputy General Secretary (2023–2025). He has also served the organization in other important executive roles at both the National Coordination Council (NCC) and ICC levels, including NCC President.
Known within the NRNA community as a polite, positive-thinking, and media-friendly personality, Sapkota has built a strong reputation for his balanced approach and ability to work constructively with different groups. He is widely regarded as a well-connected figure with strong relationships across government and non-government institutions, as well as within Nepal’s political and administrative circles.
Sapkota is also recognized for his deep knowledge of the NRNA constitution and institutional structure. Throughout his long involvement with the organization, he has worked closely with many past and founding presidents of NRNA. His extensive institutional memory and experience have made him a respected figure and a key resource for the organization.
He has also played an active role during challenging times for the organization. When NRNA faced internal divisions, Sapkota worked seriously toward uniting the organization and was a member of the dialogue committee formed to facilitate discussions and efforts to reunite NRNA.
Beyond his involvement with NRNA, Sapkota has also been actively engaged in promoting Nepal internationally. He has served as a representative of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) for Denmark and Malta. In 2022, he was appointed as a Tourism Goodwill Ambassador for Wales, and he is currently serving as a Tourism Promoter appointed by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation of Nepal.

With a background in data-driven work and a strong focus on facts and figures, Sapkota has played an important role in maintaining and strengthening the NRNA database and institutional records. Colleagues often describe him as a thoughtful mediator and a “think tank” within the organization, capable of helping resolve issues and building consensus during challenging situations.
Widely known in the diaspora community as a committed, trusted, transparent, and non-conflict-oriented individual, Sapkota is regarded as a true representative of the Non-Resident Nepali community. His friendly nature and cooperative leadership style have earned him respect across different groups within NRNA.
Having remained continuously active in NRNA since its early years and never losing an election while serving in executive roles, Sapkota brings decades of experience, dedication, and institutional knowledge to his new role.
The 12th NRNA Global Convention and International General Assembly, held on March 14–16, 2026, in Kathmandu, elected a total of 69 NRNA executives under the leadership of Dr. Hemraj Sharma as President.
