NRNA Raises Tourism and NRN Concerns with Hon. Sumnima Udas

A delegation from the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) met with Hon. Sumnima Udas, Chair of the International Relations and Tourism Committee of the Federal Parliament of Nepal, to discuss ways to strengthen Nepal’s tourism sector and address key issues faced by Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs).

The meeting was attended by NRNA Founder Mr. Bhim Udas, Vice President Rojina Pradhan Rai, Women Vice President Tika Gurung, Radhika (NRNA representative), and Som Nath Sapkota, Spokesperson of NRNA ICC and Chair of the Tourism Promotion Committee.

Key Issues and Suggestions on Tourism Development

During the discussion, the delegation presented a set of concerns and practical suggestions related to tourism development and the broader NRN community. They highlighted Nepal’s strong tourism potential, citing its natural beauty, cultural richness, and spiritual significance as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.

However, they also pointed out persistent challenges, including high airfares, limited direct flights, infrastructure gaps, inconsistent service quality, and weak global branding. Delays in administrative processes, policy inconsistencies, and limited digital outreach were also raised as major concerns.

Focus on Digital Promotion and Global Outreach

A significant part of the discussion centered on digital promotion. The delegation shared how the NRNA and Nepali communities abroad are actively promoting Nepal through social media campaigns, cultural programs, travel storytelling, and global networking across more than 80 countries. They emphasized that while this growing digital presence is helping Nepal reach wider international audiences, stronger coordination and national-level support are needed to maximize its impact.

Som Nath Sapkota further elaborated on the consistent efforts of NRNA and the diaspora in promoting Nepal globally. He noted that National Coordination Councils (NCCs) are actively organizing programs that serve as effective platforms for tourism promotion, and stressed the need for closer collaboration with the Nepal Tourism Board and other relevant agencies.

Perspectives from NRNA Leadership

NRNA Founder Mr. Bhim Udas reflected on the organization’s past, present, and future role, highlighting its increasing contribution to Nepal’s socio-economic development and the need to further strengthen its engagement.

Vice President Rojina Pradhan Rai raised issues related to the implementation of NRN citizenship provisions and concerns affecting the Gurkha community, calling for clearer policies and effective execution.

Women Vice President Tika Gurung and Radhika highlighted NRNA’s ongoing role in promoting Nepal globally, including efforts to support Nepali products in international markets and strengthen the country’s image through diaspora networks.

Investment Climate and Policy Recommendations

The delegation also emphasized the need for a more investment-friendly environment, suggesting simplified procedures, a one-window system, legal clarity, and expanded opportunities for NRNs to invest in tourism-related sectors such as hotels, resorts, eco-tourism, and heritage development.

Positive Response from Parliamentary Chair

Hon. Sumnima Udas responded positively to the concerns and suggestions, appreciating the delegation’s inputs and assuring her commitment to advancing these issues through appropriate institutional channels.

The meeting concluded on a positive and hopeful note, with both sides agreeing on the importance of stronger collaboration between the government and the global Nepali diaspora to further promote Nepal’s tourism sector and address NRN concerns effectively.
